About
Biography
Jenna Mari Matecki (b. 1988, American) is a sculptor and artist based in Barcelona whose practice explores emergence and the unexpected beauty and joy in evolution and reinvention. Over the past decade, she has produced coral and bone-like sculptures in bronze, ceramic, alabaster and marble, deploying direct sculpture techniques and unexpected firesand combinations. Her haptic and highly textural sculptures and installations, which viewers are invited to touch, have been exhibited globally in Siesta Gallery (Barcelona, Spain), MidoriSo (Tokyo, Japan), and McCagg Gallery (New York, USA), and are held in private collections. Prolific in her output, she is also the cofounder of experiential design studio AMARIMA, whose team represents her and facilitates her commissions through their FORMS division.
Her studio is located in Gràcia, Barcelona.
Artist Statement
My practice is translating the depth with which I feel everything into new emergent forms that are reminiscent of ancient ones: coral, bone, fractals. I improvise all my pieces in the moment and in response to the material in front of me, with very little preplanning save for the material choice and final size. This improvisation is a trance-like state where I attempt to freeze a feeling that is mine, or one entrusted to me by the person commissioning the work, into a form that reads as if it were once alive, or that perhaps it’s still breathing, blooming, becoming.
What you're seeing on this page are my personal photos of my practice, taken directly from my phone. The process is part of the art itself - that messiness, the fun of it all.
